Marsupial Belt is a companion bag for the studio, the garden, or for everyday use. It is designed to be worn around the waist and rest on the upper leg, combining the practicality of a utility belt and the elegance of an exterior pocket. The pattern is minimal waste: the bag is made from a single rectangular piece of fabric with only two percent becoming scrap.

View A includes a welted front zipper and an interior lining. View B omits the front zipper and lining is therefore more minimal in design and beginner-friendly in construction. Each view has five pockets: one interior, one scoop, and three patch pockets named according to their intended function e.g. card pocket, pen pocket, snips pocket. Feel free to customize the patch pockets’ dimensions and proportions so the bag is perfectly customized to the objects you carry most.

Material Requirements

  • Fabric: a 20” x 23-1/4” (51x59 cm) piece becomes the marsupial belt’s bag and strap. It is best suited in a medium-weight woven fabric, such as canvas, waxed canvas, or oilskin at 8-12 oz/yard (280-400 gsm).

  • D-Rings: 3 x D-Rings with a 1-1/4” (32 mm) inside dimension

View A only

  • Zipper: 6” (15 cm)-long, for the interior pocket.

  • Lining Fabric: a 10-1/4” x 12-1/2” (26.25x32 cm) piece becomes the interior pocket’s lining. It is best suited in a light-weight woven fabric.

Difficulty Level

Both views require sewing straight seams, curved seams, topstitching, and edgestitching. View A includes a welted front zipper, and a interior lined pocket, making it Intermediate level. View B is suitable for Confident Beginners and up, as it omits the front zipper and is therefore more minimal in design and beginner-friendly in construction.
